Prototyping of Individual Ankle Orthosis Using Additive Manufacturing Technologies

Abstract: The paper presents design and manufacturing process of an individualized ankle orthosis using additive manufacturing technologies and reverse engineering. Conventional processes of manufacturing of orthoses are expensive and time consuming Thus, an alternative method was proposed. The patient's leg was 3D scanned and the orthosis was designed using a CAD system. It was then manufactured using the Fused Deposition Modelling technology, assembled and fully tested. Positive results were obtained.

“…One possible explanation could it be the fact that the study was done in 2011 and that FDM has been used in the last years, as we can observe with the results. Wierzbicka et al (2017) explain that FDM is one of the most widespread technologies due to its low cost of purchase and maintenance, simple and friendly manufacturing process, and mate-rial strength and dimensional accuracy. The materials most used by FDM are the thermoplastics Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and Poly-lacticacid (PLA) in a form of filaments, but the range of materials available are expanding.…”

“…for the design of a cosmetic prosthesis, there are considerable difficulties associated with keeping the patient's hand still during scanning. In [20], the structural light scanning of the full surface of the lower leg of the human body was successfully applied in the process of designing an individualized ankle orthosis.…”
