Provision of MBMS over the GERAN: technical solutions and performance

Abstract: 3GPP is currently in the process of standardising the Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS). In this paper the technical solutions adopted for the provision of these services over the GERAN A/Gb mode are presented. Simulation results are provided showing the data rates that can be achieved over the radio interface using the data transfer mechanisms already available in Release 5. Some of the concepts (to be included as part of Release 6) that have been proposed in 3GPP to increase the data rates, suc… Show more

“…There is a lot in common between 3GPP MBMS and 3GPP2 broadcast services [31], [32], including their functionally similar service architectures, the use of IP multicast framework for services, and the introduction of minimal changes to the existing radio and core network protocols: all these reduce the implementation costs in both terminals and the network. Furthermore, several proposals for FEC schemes based on outer RS codes at the link layer are being considered as possible extensions to form part of the upcoming MBMS standard [33], [34], [35]. This aims to improve service reliability and its error control structure is close to that of CDMA2000 broadcast services.…”

“…As the results show, the compact version of maps is profitable for all numbers of sub-bursts in UL as well as for up to 12 sub-bursts in DL over all length of Reduced CID. The relation between BLER (for ARQ confirmation) and PER (for HARQ confirmation) is defined according to (Provvedi et al, 2004) by following equation:…”

“…As discussed in [12], even adopting the most robust CS it is not possible to achieve a sufficient QoS without adopting some additional technique; the full coverage with a net data rate of 45 kbps is thus obtained through a single repetition of all transmitted packets.…”
