Proximal Femoral Dimension in Elderly Chinese Women with Hip Fractures in Taiwan

Abstract: To investigate the relationship between proximal femoral geometry and the occurrence of hip fracture, we compared the geometry of contralateral normal hips of 120 elderly Chinese women with hip fractures, including 63 femoral neck fractures (group A) and 57 intertrochanteric fractures (group B) due to minor trauma, with that of 72 normal elderly Chinese women (group C). The mean ages for group A, B and C subjects were 77.3, 79.7 and 72.9 years, respectively. The femoral neck length (NL), neck width (NW), diame… Show more

“…The proximal femur acts as a brace, and its biomechanical properties depend on the width and length of the femoral neck. In several studies, hip axis length (HAL) measured on digitized [7,8] or nondigitized [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] pelvic radiographs or on DXA scans [11,[16][17][18] was associated with hip fracture independently from femoral neck BMD.…”

“…In our study, besides BMD values we decided to use radiographies to calculate the proximal geometrical values which were previously used directly for the measurement of proximal femoral geometry in different studies (Glüer et al, 1994;Faulkner et al, 1995;Peacock et al, 1998;Karlsson et al, 1996;Theobald et al, 1998;Yang et al, 1999). The results of measurements from direct radiographies are in millimeters (mm): 36.62 6 3.87 mm for the femoral neck width in our fracture group and 35.38 6 3.06 mm in the control group.…”

“…Proximal femur anatomy provide information about the hip joint mechanism 5 . Thus, proksimal femur geometry can be used in estimation of the hip fracture 8,9 . Moreover, loss of bone mineral density in proksimal femur increases inclination to fall.…”

“…If impact stres increases and bone strength decreases, this fracture will occur easily. Furhermore, it has been shown that impact stres of proksimal femur leads to longer femoral neck length (NL) and smaller crosssectional area of the femoral neck 8,9 . It has been also determined that the racial differences in NL affect the differences in fracture risk incidence.…”
