“…A question for this project was not just "what sort of responses might local services implement?, " but "what sort of responses would be visible to communities/service users?". The innovation literature in rural health (40,41), such as it is, identifies three main types of local action - In "normal times, " these changes tend to occur over long periods of time, favoring "prudence" over "speed" (42).…”

“…Research interest in rural health enterprises (RHEs), as rural-based providers or/and producers of goods or/and services related to the health of rural population, has increased of late (Kelly et al , 2019; Best and Myers, 2019; Macaulay et al , 2018; Calo et al , 2018; Millar et al , 2016; Addicott, 2011; Solar and Irwin, 2010); this arises from the fact that the spatial and territorial dimensions are considered to be key elements of entrepreneurial activities (Welter, 2011). At the same time, the changes generated by the external environment, may demand new organizational approaches (Ramadani et al , 2020) and ways of exploiting social capital (Dana et al , 2019).…”

“…Another consideration was that in EU rural areas seniors make up more of the population than they do in urban areas and research has demonstrated that seniors are more likely to get involved in social enterprises to support their communities (Loarne-Lemaire et al , 2017). There is an increasing volume of research which has been produced with regard to social health enterprises in non-metropolitan areas of Europe (Best and Myers, 2019; Calo et al , 2019; Henderson et al , 2019; Kelly et al , 2019; Macaulay et al , 2018; Hall et al , 2016). The vast majority of those studies have come from the UK (Kelly et al , 2019; Henderson et al , 2019; Best and Myers, 2019; Calo et al , 2019; Macaulay et al , 2018; Steinerowski and Steinerowska-Streb, 2012).…”
