Pseudotumor of the Orbit in a Prosimian Primate (Lesser Bushbaby; Galago senegalensis)

Abstract: A slowly growing mass appeared dorsolateral to the right eye of an adult female lesser bushbaby, Galago senegalensis. Surgically removed and examined histologically, the tumor showed combined histological features of lymphoid, plasmacytic and sclerosing orbital pseudotumors.

“…Pseudoepitheliomatous (pseudocarcinomatous) hyperplasia of the skin was reported in 8 greater bush babies (Galago crassicaudatus, current taxonomic name O. crassicaudatus) and 7 pottos (Perodicticus potto) after topical administration of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) plus a cocarcinogen (dodecylbenzene). 1,43,44 Although the chemical 7,12-DMBA plus a cocarcinogen was also shown to induce skin neoplasms in greater bush babies, 1,12,44,66,75,77 the cases of pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia were excluded based on the diagnosis of hyperplasia, which indicated that these lesions were not true neoplastic processes.…”

“…A mass designated as an orbital pseudotumor was described in a lesser bushbaby. 9 This mass developed within the bulbar conjunctiva at the limbus, was unencapsulated but easily separated from adjacent tissue, and consisted of a mixture of fibroblasts, plasma cells, lymphocytes, and scattered neutrophils. A similar mass, designated as a lacrimal pseudotumor, was reported in a young Bull Terrier.…”

“…They are well recognised in the human medical literature as focal, benign mass lesions that occur in a variety of locations; however, there is ongoing debate about their inflammatory versus neoplastic nature, which is reflected by numerous synonyms (Häusler et al, 2003). In veterinary medicine, case reports of IPTs are rare and most have been reported in the orbital cavity in cats and dogs (Haines and Moncure, 1973;Miller et al, 2000;Billson et al, 2006;van der Woerdt, 2008;Knight et al, 2009). IPT and IPT-like lesions have also been reported arising from the periorbita (Williams et al, 1998), subcutis (Miller et al, 1999;Wako et al, 2005;Knight et al, 2009) and thoracic and abdominal organs (Slocombe et al, 1992;Gartner et al, 2002;Boyle et al, 2004;Liu et al, 2005;Böhme et al, 2010).…”
