Psoriasis and Dry Eye Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with potential systemic involvement. Some evidence suggests an increased risk of dry eye in patients with psoriasis. However, the relationship between these two conditions remains unclear. The aim of our study is to investigate the association between psoriasis and dry eye disease. Methods: This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020199445) and adhered to MOOSE ch… Show more

“…Commonly known ocular effects of retinoids include DED, eye irritation, and blepharoconjunctivitis, although eyelash loss and pseudotumor cerebri syndrome have also been described [ 3 ]. This supports the hypothesis that DED in patients with psoriasis may be due to the chronic inflammatory disease itself and/or lacrimal film instability [ 32 ]. A previous study reported no association between DED and most therapies, except for an unexpected association with the previous use of coal tar ( p < 0.05) [ 4 ].…”

“…The idea of the epidermis acting as a psoriatic inflammatory trigger is an ongoing debate in the field 76 . Notably, in further support of SG obstructions being prevalent in psoriasis, in the eye, psoriatic patients are known to have MG obstructions 77,78 and thus decreased meibum flow 79 . Our findings offer a novel likely mechanism here and warrant a review to determine if SSGs of psoriasis patients are also obstructed.…”

“…PS is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease with prevalent skin involvement. Indeed, a systemic spreading of the disease has been recognized with possible extension to joints [ 17 ], aorta [ 18 ] and eye [ 19 ]. Myocardial inflammation has been previously suggested in the setting of dilated cardiomyopathy manifesting in subjects with PS, but histologic confirmation as well as pathogenetic correlations with the former disease have not been provided so far.…”
