Although warfare is thought to be responsible for high and increasing levels of morbidity and mortality in the modern era, little comparative epidemiologic research is available on the subject. Most research on past wars has been carried out for purposes of military planning. The present report provides an overview of the direct health impacts of various wars on military and civilian populations during the last 200 years. Risk factors for injury and death are analyzed. Changes in weaponry, military strategy, and medical services are found to modify the health effects of warfare.

One hundred seventy-one references relevant to posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) in Vietnam veterans are listed. Psychologically and medically oriented journals, books, and government publications were searched for research and clinical reports pertinent to the etiology, symptomatology, and treatment of PTSDs in Vietnam veterans. In addition, published narratives of veterans' combat experiences and research on PTSDs from other conflicts (e.g., World War II, Korean conflict, Yom Kippur war} were searched for relevant information.

Twenty-six Vietnam veterans were studied to determine the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and hypnotizability. The intensity of their posttraumatic stress disorder was measured by a self-report. Their hypnotizability scores, vividness of imagery scores, and symptomatic profiles were also ascertained. Veterans with low or no posttraumatic stress disorder scores had normal hypnotizability scores and normal imagery scores, whereas those with high posttraumatic stress disorder scores had high hypnotizability scores and high imagery scores. The authors conclude that either combat traumas enhanced hypnotic potential in some veterans or that veterans with excellent hypnotic potential to begin with were more susceptible to posttraumatic stress.
