Background: The extent of endometriosis is not directly related to the degree of symptoms, and recurrence of symptoms occurs frequently. Given that, an association with psychological distress, as in depression and anxiety disorders, is suggested. Objective: To explore the strength of the associations between endometriosis and depression or anxiety and to review potential correlating factors. Search Strategy: A literature search was carried out using the electronic databases Embase, PubMed, Web-of-science and PsycINFO. Search terms related to depression, anxiety and endometriosis were combined resulting in 1,837 records. Selection criteria: Articles describing an association between endometriosis and depression or anxiety by using validated assessment tools, structured psychiatric interviews or a documented diagnosis were included. Data collection and Analysis: With 47 articles a systematic qualitative review was performed. Seventeen studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Main Results: In the meta-analysis, endometriosis patients experienced significantly more symptoms of depression (SMD of 0.71 (95%CI 0.36, 1.06) and anxiety (SMD 0.60 (95%CI 0.35, 0.84)) compared to healthy controls, but no differences were found comparing endometriosis patients with chronic pelvic pain patients without endometriosis. Besides the effect of pain, other correlating factors included age, quality of life, quality of sleep, fatigue, sexual function, gastrointestinal symptoms, comorbidity, selfesteem, emotional self-efficacy, coping style, social adjustment, pain imagery and pain sensitization. Conclusion: Endometriosis is associated with depression and anxiety. Therefore, an integrated patient-centred approach to medical, psychological and sexual issues is suggested as this may positively influence the perception of symptoms, treatment adherence, quality of life, prognosis and health care costs.

Introduction / 4When defining infertility, it is essential to distinguish between primary infertility, which refers to women who have never conceived, and secondary infertility, which refers to women who have conceived and have thereafter developed an infertility problem. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF INFERTILITYIn antiquity, fertility was thought to be controlled by magic, the Gods, or the moon, while astrology and numerology provided dates and numbers that could enhance the likelihood of conception (Leiblum, 1997). In many primitive tribes, such as the Ingarda Tribe in Australia, conception was not associated with the sexual act and fertilisation was thought to occur when the woman ate something specific. Also, the Trobian Islanders believed that pregnancy occurred with the rupture of the hymen by whatever means and that sexual intercourse was not associated with fertility (ibid.).Lazzaro Spallazani in 1786 was the first to establish that spermatozoa were essential for fertilisation, while only in 1827 Van Koltiker realised that spermatozoa were formed in the testicular cells and fertilised the ovum. To determine if stress associated with artificial pregnancy treatment might affect early communication, video microanalysis was applied to examine face-to-face play between infants and their mothers in the first 5 months. Three groups of infants participated: 8 born after in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment employing parental gametes; 8 born after standard infertility treatment (INF), which did not include IVF; and 8 infants whose parents had experienced no infertility problems (Control group: C). All were videotaped at home in free play with their mothers at 4, 7, 13, and 21 weeks of age. A 3-min extract of each video was reviewed in detail by means of an objective coding system, to define the style of communication. Data from this analysis was subjected to two separate repeated measures of analyses of variance.We found no evidence of detrimental effects of infertility treatment on mother-infant communication, but there were "positive" differences in behavior in the pairs where the mother had been so treated. Thus, while maternal "caretaking" episodes had become infrequent in the control group by the age of 21 weeks, in the two treatment groups the mothers continued to show many caretaking behaviors with infants of this age. Furthermore, infants of both the IVF and INF groups showed significantly higher frequencies of "play" episodes than those in the control group (p ϭ 0.018 and p ϭ 0.004, respectively). Apart from these differences, mother-infant interactions were generally the same in the three groups.The results indicate that communication between mothers and infants is likely to develop along the normal path after IVF or INF treatment, but that mothers who have had these infertility treatments may be more attentive to their infants, and their infants are significantly more playful. Since the IVF and the INF groups were similar, it would appear that these differences from the control group are related to the experience of a successful treatment for infertility, and not related to any particular stresses that may be associated with IVF treatment.RESUMEN: Teniendo come meta el determinar si el estrés asociado con el tratamiento de embarazo artificial pudiera afectar la comunicación temprana, se usó un microanálisis de vídeo para examinar el juego cara a cara entre madres e infantes de cinco meses de edad.
