Psychometric evaluation of a short measure of social capital at work

Abstract: Background: Prior studies on social capital and health have assessed social capital in residential neighbourhoods and communities, but the question whether the concept should also be applicable in workplaces has been raised. The present study reports on the psychometric properties of an 8-item measure of social capital at work.

“…The SCWQ is an eight-item questionnaire which measures shared attitudes and values in an organization, respect and trust between workers, and reciprocity. The SCWQ has been validated and shown reliable for use in the supervisor population (Cronbach's α equal to 0.88) [38]. The SCWQ was considered as a potential confounder because supervisors who have positive attitudes and trust with their workers may be more inclined to provide workplace accommodation.…”

“…The SCWQ is used to measure the key components of social capital at the workplace: shared attitudes and values among members of an organization, reciprocity, mutual respect and trust between workmates, collective action and participation in the networks at work, and trust in and trustworthiness of a supervisor. The 8-item scale has been shown to be a reliable and valid measure of social capital [32]. The internal consistency of this measure is good (Cronbach's alpha = 0.87).…”

“…In addition, the notion of social capital, recently has received greater attention as a possible explanation to the disparities in health and its social gradient 13 . A breakthrough in this topic was the development in Finland of a short scale to measure social capital at work 14 . This scale has the prospect of an inequality perspective of the efficacy of social capital; with only eight items (table 1), it seeks to explore whether people feel respected, valued and treated with equality at work.…”
