Psychometric properties of the General Health Questionnaire-12 in a sample of Hong Kong employees

Abstract: The General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) is a widely used instrument for measuring psychological strain, but the factor structure of the GHQ-12 is inconclusive. The present study examined one-factor, two-factor and three-factor models of the GHQ-12 using structural equations modelling in a longitudinal dataset of Hong Kong employees. The findings supported a two-factor model consisting of a 'Social Dysfunction' factor measured by three items, and an 'Anxiety/Depression' factor measured by four items. Implic… Show more

“…Besides that, we reinforce the need for a holistic intervention approach, targeting the full range of possible movement behaviors in a day, instead of a single one (e.g., MVPA) [16,18], to improve mental health in adolescents. Also, our results aligned with previous studies that identified the two factors structure of the GHQ-12, comprising the depression/anxiety and the social dysfunction factors [22][23][24]33].…”

“…Several studies have found a two-dimensional representation to fit the observed data best, but these are not always comparable as they differ in respect to the latent factor content, the parameterization of the model or even the number of items included in the analysis. For example, studies have found support for two factors based on a reduced 7-item (Wong and O'Driscoll, 2016), 8item (Kalliath et al, 2004;Ip and Martin, 2006), or 10-item (Salama-Younes et al, 2009) version of the GHQ. Others have included correlations between the unique variance of items without providing any logical or theoretical justifications for these additions (e.g., Namjoo et al, 2017).…”

“…The GHQ-12 is a widely used and easy-to-understand instrument for measuring parents’ psychological strain, particularly in aspects of social dysfunction and anxiety/depression. The Chinese version of the GHQ-12 has been validated in several studies 36 37…”
