Psychometric properties of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 (PG-13) in bereaved Swedish parents

Abstract: This study aimed to validate the Swedish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 tool (PG-13) by examining its psychometric properties, including factor structure, discriminant and concurrent validity. The PG-13 was assessed in a sample of Swedish parents who had lost a child to cancer 1-5 years previously. The sample included 225 parents (133 mothers and 92 fathers) with a mean age of 46.02 years (SD = 8.15) and 16.0% met the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). “…The potential for poor well‐being and stress overload among double bereaved children and young adults is also found in other studies to exceed the capacity of normal coping abilities and resulted in prolongation and complicated grief (Marcussen, Hounsgaard, O’Connor, et al, ; Margaret Stroebe & Schut, ). It is evident that particular support is required to specifically mitigate the stress overload these children and young adults experience to promote their well‐being (Marcussen, Hounsgaard, O’Connor, et al, ; Pohlkamp, Kreicbergs, Prigerson, & Sveen, ; WHO—World Health Organization, ).…”

“…PG‐13 is scored as a continuous measure by summing the eleven symptom items and excluding the two duration and functional impairment items . The total score ranges from 11 to 55, with a higher score indicating more symptoms of PGD, cut‐off equal to or more than 35. Cronbach's α was 0.89.…”

“…A five-point scoring system was used (1 = never and 5 = several times a day) to rate the first 11 items. The last two items regarding the length of bereavement and functional impairment were to be answered “yes” or “no.” Total scores of the 11 items excluding the functional impairment and length items were calculated to represent the severity levels of grief symptoms ( Pohlkamp et al, 2018 ). The Chinese version of PG-13 was shown to have good validity and reliability and was widely used in bereaved people ( He et al, 2014 ; Zhou et al, 2018 ).…”
