Public Health Concerns about Caliciviruses as Waterborne Contaminants

Abstract: Caliciviruses are disseminated by the fecal-oral route and are found in contaminated surface and ground waters. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is interested in preventing calicivirus contamination in treated waters used for consumption, and these viruses are on the EPA's "contaminant candidate list" for regulatory consideration in drinking waters. These viruses also present a health threat for recreation and shellfish-growing waters. However, before EPA can make regulatory decisions regarding cal… Show more

“…NoV infections cause symptoms of severe vomiting, watery diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, and general malaise (17,58). Primary infection results from the ingestion of fecally contaminated food or water, while secondary infection results from person-to-person contact, aerosolized vomitus, fomites, and infected food handlers (6,23,25,28,33,46). Low-level transmission can occur via contaminated drinking supplies when surface water or groundwater supplies are contaminated (4,16,26,31,47).…”

“…The high prevalence of NoV genogroup I (GI) in wastewaters and treated effluents (4,16) raises questions of environmental stability and resistance to wastewater treatment. Less is known about the circulation of NoV in other waters (22,28,30), although the importance of viral contamination from sewage effluents in shellfish growing areas is well recognized (2,18).…”

“…NLVs are highly infectious, with a minimal infectious dose of an estimated 10 to 100 virus particles (33,38), and are frequently responsible for foodborne outbreaks due to contaminated water, ready-to-eat dishes, seafood, fruits, and vegetables (2,4,5,7,8,10,14,16,20,21,24,26,28,31; J.
