Public–private partnerships (PPPs) in smart infrastructure projects: the role of stakeholders

Abstract: The relationship between urban sustainability of new smart cities and infrastructure projects has become integrated, and reflects the country's progress and prosperity, smart infrastructure projects classified in two main categories, the first is upgrading or retrofitting the built-up infrastructure and provide it with smart solutions, the second is establishing a new infrastructure for new urban sprawl or replace the built-up infrastructure with new one to cope with the global population increase. The concept… Show more

“…Amusan et al (2020) believe that STI would open up access to digital infrastructure that meets the need of the present generation without compromising the future; hence, Esposito and Dicorato (2020) supports proper use of a framework capable of taking into account the need for efficiency, accountability, economic, social and environmental sustainability when prioritising PPP projects to implement. This incentivises the mitigation and control of social and global challenges for the present and future generations through smart infrastructure projects (Selim and Elgohary, 2020;UN, 2016). Regrettably, STI result in PPPs is difficult to measure currently because of limited information on countries that have incorporated STI framework as part of their ideological motive of PPP adoption and how it fits into their broader development strategies (Inter-agency Force on Financing for Development, 2018).…”

“…Regrettably, STI result in PPPs is difficult to measure currently because of limited information on countries that have incorporated STI framework as part of their ideological motive of PPP adoption and how it fits into their broader development strategies (Inter-agency Force on Financing for Development, 2018). However, the positive effects like the provision of sustainable infrastructure resilient to environmental and climatic impact through industrial revolution (Amusan et al, 2020) can be seen, which encourages further intensive initiatives in this direction (Meissner, 2019), to address challenges of current regulation adapting to that of STI, financial constraint, multistakeholder perspective and smart governance that makes STI application more comprehensive (Selim and Elgohary, 2020).…”

“…e study aimed to establish a successful PPP model for the smart infrastructure project phase, clearly demonstrating the roles of stakeholders. Especially in the case of high project cost, it can help improve work efficiency and work quality while reducing costs [6]. Smith developed a real-time adaptive traffic signal control system to divert urban road traffic flow.…”

“…Although government can utilize funds from energy sector budget of CPEC, still the involvement of private sector reduces significant financial burden on government and enhances the effectiveness of a project. The authors in [57] suggest that by involving the stakeholders in public private partnerships (PPPs), the gap in expectations of stakeholders could be significantly reduced and thus any sort of resistance from stakeholders could be eradicated. A critical analysis was conducted in [58] for sustainable projects to determine the key factors responsible for the success of PPPs.…”
