“… 17 , 18 These beneficial effects are closely associated with the activation of the phosphoinositide 3‐kinase (PI3K)/AKT (protein kinase B) pathway. 17 , 18 In addition, puerarin significantly reduced the cytotoxicity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via an enhancement of catalase super oxide mutase (SOD), prevented the development of the apoptosis of pancreatic β‐cells, increased the survival capacity of β‐cells, and promoted the secretion of insulin from pancreatic islets, finally contributing to the decreases in body weight and blood glucose levels. 19 , 20 , 21 Furthermore, puerarin blocked the preadipocyte differentiation and the glucose uptake of adipocytes in insulin resistant conditions.…”

“…The regulation of glucose production and storage by the liver is crucial for gluconeogenesis and glycogen synthesis. The most important source of endogenous glucose production in hepatic gluconeogenesis, a hallmark in type 2 diabetes patients ( Liu et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Glucose-6-phosphatase (G6pase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) are the pivotal rate-limiting enzymes in gluconeogenesis, and Foxo1 modulates insulin sensitivity. Under the condition of insulin resistance, PI3K/Akt activity is decreased, and hepatic gluconeogenesis is promoted due to increased PEPCK and G6pase expression driven by Foxo1 ( Liu et al, 2021 ).…”

“…PHL can also improve insulin resistance, enhance insulin sensitivity, and reduce BG. Meanwhile, it has been reported that PHL can inhibit the high expression of G-6-Pase (David-Silva et al, 2020;Liu et al, 2021).…”
