Pulse-shape discrimination with crystal scintillators

Abstract: The light output, α/β ratio, and pulse shape have been investigated at −25 • C with PbWO 4 crystal scintillators undoped, and doped by F, Eu, Mo, Gd and S. The fast 0.01 − 0.06 µs and middle 0.1 − 0.5 µs components of scintillation decay were observed for all the samples. Slow components of scintillation signal with the decay times 1 − 3 µs and 13 − 28 µs with the total intensity up to ≈ 50% have been recognized for several samples doped by Molybdenum. We found some indications of a pulse-shape discrimination … Show more

“…Different methods can be used to realize pulse-shape discrimination. We would like to refer to the optimal filter method proposed by Gatti and De Martini [225], and developed in [226] for CdWO 4 crystal scintillators, and then successfully applied to many scintillators [205,229,210,153,155,159,227,228,216]. In the optimal filter method, a shape indicator (SI) -a numerical characteristic -can be calculated for each scintillation event produced by a scintillator:…”

“…The mean time method is also widely used to discriminate β(γ) and α particles in scintillation detectors (see e.g. [187,202,208,228]). The following formula can be applied to calculate the mean time parameter t for each pulse:…”

“…The presence of a trap in PbWO 4 that was not associated with impurities or structural defects had a negative effect on the light output of scintillations at low temperatures. This was important in view of the potential use of this crystal in experiments on the recording of rare events at ultralow temperatures [3]. Fluorine-doping caused a significant change of luminescent properties in the studied crystals.…”

“…Future prospects for application of PbWO 4 scintillators, e.g., as active protection for experiments on the recording of rare events at ultralow temperatures [3] and as detectors for the separation of scintillation and Cherenkov radiation [4], are under discussion.…”

“…2) Different time gate methods (charge integration): In these methods, the pulse charge ratio is measured for short and long time gates, which are more efficient for fast and slow components, respectively [7] , [10]. 3) Digital filter methods: In these methods, each pulse shape is digitized and compared with two different standard pulse shapes, which are simulated beforehand for γ and α-rays [11][12][13].…”
