Pulsed Radiofrequency of Lumbar Dorsal Root Ganglion for Chronic Postamputation Phantom Pain

Abstract: Chronic pain following lower-limb amputation is now a well-known neuropathic, chronic-pain syndrome that usually presents as a combination of phantom and stump pain. Controlling these types of neuropathic pain is always complicated and challenging. If pharmacotherapy does not control the patient’s pain, interventional procedures have to be taken. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) on the dorsal root ganglia at the L4 and L5 nerve roots to improve phantom pain… Show more

“…The electric current generated by radio waves is used to heat a small nerve tissue area, thereby inhibiting or reducing pain signals from that particular area. In the last five years, radiofrequency has been developed for diseases related to the spinal functional unit (1,(3)(4)(5). modality of pain therapy are mixed, and systematic reviews of PRF are still limited.…”

“…PRF of thoracic dorsal root ganglion can alleviate chronic pain after thoracotomy[ 26 ] (LE: 3b; SR: Strong). PRF of lumbar dorsal root ganglion can alleviate chronic post-amputation phantom pain and stump pain[ 27 , 28 ] (LE: 4; SR: Strong). PRF of the ilioinguinal nerve and genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve can alleviate chronic post-surgical orchialgia caused by groin surgery[ 29 ] (LE: 1b; SR: Strong).…”

“…RF therapy of spinal ganglia[ 22 , 23 ]: PRF is generally used in dorsal root ganglion of spinal nerve. Under the guidance of imaging, the RF puncture needle should be punctured to the posterior 1/3 of the intervertebral foramen (below the inferior notch of the upper vertebral pedicle).…”
