“…Wastewater treatment plants that have high capacity use factors (Guerrini et al, 2017) are less flexible compared to oversized wastewater treatment plants in terms of the feasibility of storing the wastewater to delay treatment. Influent flow rates may highly fluctuate such that the maximum‐to‐minimum ratio of influent flow rates can be as high as 4:1 (Hamitlon, Braun, Dare, Koopman, & Svoronos, 2006) (e.g., as demonstrated by the flow rate pattern of the Hyperion wastewater treatment plant located in Los Angeles, CA [Poosti, Lewis, Sereno, Redd, & Abkian, 2002]).…”

“…The robust, simple design of the Archimedes screw allows it to transport solids and fluids between its blades without obstruction-making it advantageous for a variety of implementations [23]. It has functioned as a water [24] and wastewater pump [25], a conveyor for granular solids (ie, grains) [26,27], a fish ladder [28][29][30], a drive mechanism for amphibious vehicles [31], for injection molding [32], land reclamation [33], heart valve replacements [34], and for hydropower generation [35]. Note that this paper focuses on applications involving water conveyance.…”

“…Although LADWP's 2015 UWMP (LADWP 2016) predicts an increasing influent flow to Hyperion plant (which will increase electricity use), the co-generation plant capacity is still large enough to meet all electricity demand. We calculated the peak electricity demand of Hyperion using a representative influent flow curve shown in Figure 50 from Poosti et al (2002). It is estimated that the peak load of this facility will increase to 31 MW by 2050, which is still less than its on-site generation capacity.…”
