Purdue pegboard performance of normal preschool children

Abstract: Normative data on the Purdue Pegboard are presented, based on the performance of 206, right-handed male and female children between the ages of 2 years, 6 months and 5 years, 11 months. Results demonstrate developmental trends in the increased efficiency of peg placement for the right hand, left hand, and bimanual conditions. Scores increase monotonically with age; performances are stable, with high test-retest reliability. Continuity is evidenced between these data and those available for older children. Evid… Show more

“…As expected, we observed a gradual improvement of digital dexterity with age, similar to previous studies (Costa et al 1964;Gardner and Broman 1979;Wilson et al 1982;Arnould et al n.d.). As previously described, the performance on the PPT increased until stabilizing at the age of 10 years (Costa et al 1964;Arnould et al n.d.).…”

“…Children inserted thin 1-inch pegs into 2 vertical rows of holes, with right, left, and both hands, each trial for 30 seconds. Their scores were compared with 2 sets of norms, either of younger children, aged 2.5 to Ď˝6 years, 49 or of older children, aged 5 to Ď˝16 years. 50 The scores were converted into z scores with a mean of 0 and an SD of 1.…”
