Pure Polyphenols Applications for Cardiac Health and Disease

Abstract: Polyphenols are natural compounds present in fruits and vegetables that can exert beneficial effects on human health and notably, on the cardiovascular system. Some of these compounds showed significant protective activities toward atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, anthracyclin-induced cardiomyopathy, angiogenesis as well as heart failure. Polyphenols can act through systemic effects as well as through modulation of signaling pathways such as redox signaling, inflammation, autophagy and cel… Show more

“…According to their structural characteristics, they can be roughly divided into flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and stilbene. Polyphenols, such as resveratrol, quercetin, curcumin and epigallocatechin gallate, have obvious protective effects against atherosclerosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy caused by anthracyclines, angiogenesis, and HF 157 . Table 2 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 , 172 summarizes the polyphenols to treat HF via energy metabolism mechanisms.…”

“…As a result, autophosphorylation of the CaMKII would be reduced in ALDO + PRO80 rats. Certain polyphenols have shown the ability to reduce CaMKII autophosphorylation and oxidation [59,60]. The results suggest that proanthocyanidins could prevent, at least in part, CaMKII overactivation by lowering intracellular calcium overload and ROS production in aldosterone-treated rats.…”
