Putative mechanisms responsible for the decline in cancer prevalence during organism senescence

Abstract: Most scientific literature reports that aging favors the development of cancers. Each type of cancer, however, initiates and evolves differently, and their natural history can start much earlier in life before their clinical manifestations. The incidence of cancers is spread throughout human life span, and is the result of pre- and post-natal aggressions, individual susceptibility, developmental changes that evolve continuously throughout an individual's life, and time of exposure to carcinogens. Finally, duri… Show more

“…Data from several sources show that the progression of cancer is also slower in aged individuals, and metastases are often less frequent [347, 348]. The loss in genome “plasticity” during the development and aging is a possible explanation for this decline [349].…”

“…Metastases kill the patients but what is known about the age distribution? Many autopsy studies cited by Macieira-Coelho reported a decline in the rate of metastases in the elderly 23 . Similarly, the above Japanese autopsy study found the decline of metastases from 51% in age group 90–94 years to 38% in age group 100+years 21 .…”
