It is sometimes presumed that early modern religious conflict can be understood (and judged) on the basis of philosophical principles of religious freedom that display the irrationality of such conflict. Some derive these principles from Lockean and Kantian doctrines purporting to show that religions can be a matter of free rational choice and mutual toleration. Others derive them from Thomistic and communitarian traditions that purport to show that religions can learn mutual toleration by viewing each other as independent virtue-realizing communities. In this article I provide some historical reasons for thinking that conflicting forms of early modern religious identity were embedded in religious cultures whose force was such that they swept such philosophical principles along with them, giving rise to partisan philosophies that were themselves incommensurate and incapable of resolving the conflicts. This incommensurateness applied to the principles of religious freedom themselves, which appeared in rival forms. In the German empire a culture of religious pluralism emerged not from philosophy but from the institutions and practices of public law, during the period between the treaties of Augsburg (1555) and Osnabrück (1648). I argue that this juridical culture was not grounded in a particular philosophy or ideology but arose instead from the institutional habitus of public law under the exigencies of polarized religious conflict, and that it was issued not in principles of religious freedom but in a casuistry for resolving the conflict between such principles.

A autora segue as reivindicações de Mack P. Holt (1993) sobre um necessário redimensionamento do elemento religioso, frequentemente diminuído nos estudos sobre as guerras civis que se alastraram pelo reino francês durante mais de trinta anos. Já o caminho percorrido por católicos e huguenotes na tentativa de coexistência em algumas comunidades é analisado por Keith Luria (2005), o qual atenta para os aspectos individuais e familiares que forjavam a convivência entre praticantes de diferentes credos, possibilitando uma cultura comum a despeito das diferenças.…”

A Reforma Protestante, um dos limiares da modernidade para Hannah Arendt, permanece um tema fértil para especialistas do período. Passados os 500 anos de seu marco inaugural, momento relembrado por eventos e celebrações ao redor do mundo, observa-se um contexto profícuo para um balanço dos estudos que lhe são dedicados. Pela vasta extensão do tema, este ensaio contempla um recorte da historiografia concernente às rupturas religiosas ocorridas na Europa de então, abarcando, sobretudo, a produção das últimas décadas nas academias francesa e alemã. Destacam-se, entre os elementos abordados, as múltiplas interpretações da Reforma Protestante e da Contrarreforma, além da tese da confessionalização e das pesquisas acerca das guerras de religião na França e das vivências religiosas. Busca-se, assim, refletir sobre os olhares diversos da historiografia sobre o tema, sem perder de vista o contexto vivido e os impactos desses movimentos.

This entry presents the historical connections between religious warfare and empire. It first examines contextual factors which frame the changing relationship between the two. Secondly, it presents divergent maximalist and minimalist historiographies focused on arguments about the role of religion in causing the wars which affected imperial histories across the ages, giving careful attention to the challenges presented by minimalists who dismiss religion as a cause of these wars. Finally, it describes developments in the role of religion in the conduct of wars, from ancient to contemporary times, exploring the political and social factors which have led recent trends in imperial histories which again emphasize religious warfare.
