Pyloric-gland adenoma of the stomach: case report of a rare tumor successfully treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection

Abstract: A 79−year−old woman underwent gastro− duodenoscopy because of anemia. A gas− tric polyp was diagnosed as an incidental finding. The polyp was located in the gas− tric antrum and measured about 2 cm (l " Fig. 1). It was of a hard consistency, with bridging folds and a positive lifting sign. The overlying mucosa was intact. Using the narrow−band imaging tech− nique the tumor was seen to have aster− oid−shaped mucosal pits and no vascular

“…Either way, more radical techniques to remove PGAs and/or close surveillance may be warranted. In this regard, submucosal dissection has been applied successfully to remove a sporadic PGA 11 . However, despite the few cases studied, the rarity of high-grade dysplasia and lack of carcinoma in FAP-associated PGAs, as well as the fact that Western FAP patients are not at increased risk of gastric cancer, argue against aggressive treatment of gastric polyps in FAP 12 .…”

“…Pyloric gland adenoma is a rare neoplasm, and the histological resemblance of the tumor to the deep glands of the gastric mucosa near the pylorus is reflected in its name. 1 It occurs more frequently in women and in the elderly. As adenocarcinoma is detected in approximately 30% of pyloric gland adenomas, 2 they are considered precancerous lesions, and endoscopic removal is indicated.…”
