“…This is not surprising since it is well established that vanadium can be liganded by hydroxamates, carboxylates and catecholates (Keller et al, 1991 ;Rehder, 1991). Others have also demonstrated the fact that PVD, as well as PCH, can complex copper, zinc or manganese (Poppe et al, 1987 ;Chen et al, 1994 ;Visca et al, 1992 ;Bouby et al, 1999). Visca et al (1992) suggested that PCH could play a role in the acquisition of metals other than Fe(III), such as Co(II) and Mo(VI).…”

“…Because of its high Fe(III)-binding constant (8), it might be useful in competition with other microorganisms (8,9,33) under nutritionally poor conditions. Many pyoverdins produced by saprophytic fluorescent Pseudomonas strains have been described, and their spectral characteristics are similar whatever peptide chain or dicarboxylic acid is connected to the chromophore (1,2,24,29). This is due to the quinoline chromophore found in all pyoverdins (2).…”

“…[2] and [4]) gave the following picture: Fe3+-2 is neutral be tween pH 6.5 and 3.0 while Fe3+-3 carries a single negative charge at pH 6.5 (mobility 0.21 deter mined [13] relative to aspartic acid) stemming from a COOH-group with pKc/ between 4 and 5 (almost complete protonation at pH 3). This behavior is paralleled by the free ligands 2 and 3 which show a somewhat higher mobility in toto caused by the presence of the uncomplexed OH-groups (Fe3+ being replaced by 4 H +).…”
