We report an interesting observation on strong enhancement in green luminescence from hybrid ZnO/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The hybrid structures were synthesized via a high temperature sintering method. The strong green emission at 510 nm has been attributed to surface defects of ZnO, originating from interactions between ZnO and the MWCNT surface, which has been confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the two-dimensional (2D) layer of this hybrid material shows a high degree of homogeneity and 82% transparency. Time resolved emission spectroscopy measurement shows a photoluminescence decay time in microseconds, which is suitable for making optoelectronic devices.

Well-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using a hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) additive onto Al/Fe thin film deposited on Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the as-grown carbon products were thin MWCNTs with small outer diameters of less than 10 nm. H 2 S plays a key role in synthesizing thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core. The well-aligned thin MWCNTs showed a low turn-on voltage of about 1.1 V/μm at a current density of 0.1 μA/cm 2 and a high emission current of about 1.0 mA/cm 2 at a bias field of 2.3 V/μm. We suggest a possible growth mechanism for the well-aligned thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core.

Bundles of aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) have been synthesised by spray pyrolysis of turpentine oil (inexpensive precursor) and ferrocene mixture at 800 C. Turpentine oil (C 10 H 16 ), a plant-based precursor was used as a source of carbon and argon as a carrier gas. The bundles of ACNTs have been grown directly inside the quartz tube. The as-grown ACNTs have been characterised through X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopic techniques. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that the bundles of ACNTs are densely packed and are of $70-130 mm in length. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy observations indicate that as-grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are well graphitised. These CNTs have been found to have outer diameters between $15 and 40 nm. This technique suggests a low-cost route for the large-scale formation of ACNTs bundles.
