Q-switched and mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser using PtSe2 as a saturable absorber

Abstract: We report a passively Q-switched and mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on PtSe 2 , a new two-dimensional material, as a saturable absorber (SA). Self-started Q-switching at 1560 nm in the EDFL was achieved at a threshold pump power of 65 mW, and at the maximum pump power of 450 mW, the maximum single Q-switched pulse energy is 143.2 nJ. Due to the polarization-dependent characteristics of the PtSe 2-based SA, the laser can be switched from the Q-switched state to the mode-locked state by adjust… Show more

“…Driven by these efforts, mode‐locked fiber lasers based on other layered TMDCs and their derivatives including MoSe 2 , MoTe 2 , WTe 2 , WSe 2 , MoSe 2 , SnS 2 , ReS 2 , In 2 Se 3 , InS, TiS 2 , PtS 2 , PtSe 2 , and HfS 2 , have also developed rapidly, as shown in Table . It can be seen that for these lasers, the minimum pulse width is 67 fs, maximum output power is 212 mW, and maximum repetition rate is 8.82 GHz .…”

“…PtSe 2 , a rising member of the group‐10 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) family, has been demonstrated with a strong interlayer interaction and undergoes a unique evolution from semiconductor to semimetal with increasing layer thickness . It possesses many intriguing properties including an indirect energy bandgap ranging from 0 to 1.2 eV, high carrier mobility and good environmental stability, which suggests that beyond graphene and BP, PtSe 2 can be used as a good candidate in electronic devices, wide spectral response photodetector, and photodiodes, optical switches and saturable absorbers, etc. However, the evolution of nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and ultrafast dynamics with layer thickness, which is crucial for developing high performance photonic devices, has been rarely reported to date.…”

“…Passively mode-locked or Q-switched techniques are commonly-used efficient methods for generating ultra-fast pulsed lasers [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Passive techniques including nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) [ 12 ], nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), and saturable absorber (SA) [ 13 ] are employed for demonstrating pulsed lasers operating from visible to mid-infrared optical band. Among them, SA plays an important role in demonstrating passively mode-locked and Q-switched lasers due to their unique polarization-independent properties.…”
