Qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyse reliability of a mechatronic system: a case

Abstract: The main research intent of this paper is to introduce the use of fault tree analysis (FTA) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) in conjunction to analyse the risk and reliability of a complex mechatronic system in both qualitative and quantitative manner. The major focus is on handling imprecise and vague information with the help of fuzzy synthesis of information. A complex mechatronic system, i.e. modular automated production system (MAPS), composed of mechanical, electronic, and embedded software s… Show more

“…To further confirm this assertion, a combination of two very popular risk assessments tools (fault tree analysis and reliability block diagram) was used to investigate one of the most recent power transformer bushing failures. Fault tree (FTA) [15,53,54,[65][66][67][68][69][70][71] and reliability block diagrams (RBD) [53,54,[72][73][74][75] are very illustrative performance evaluation tools that have been immensely used for investigating critical plant failures across a variety of industries within the last five decades.…”

“…Based on this premise and to foster practical knowledge transfer, a team-based FTA was employed at PLN. It is vital to note that besides visually representing the relationships between various causal factors of an FTA, it is also possible to estimate the probability of occurrence of the "unwanted" or "top event" using Equations (1) and (2) [53,54,[65][66][67][68][69][70][71]76];…”

“…Studied extensively in recent years, the fuzzy theory is an efficient tool for considering uncertainty in reliability analyses (Purba et al 2014;Sharma and Sharma 2015;Gupta et al 2016;Kumar and Goel 2017). Due to uncertainty and imprecision, it is not easy to estimate dependent and independent failure rates.…”

“…RCA technique in the problem-solving process helps teams to acknowledge the causal effect relationship of failures to eliminate or reduce the potency of repetition in the future [6]. One of the methods that complement the RCA process is FTA [7], [8], which is frequently used for reliability analysis in critical systems [9], [10], and [11]. Other approaches that can be used to prevent product damage due to system or process failures before the problem occurs can be made through FMEA [12], [13] to improve the quality and analysis of product inconsistency [14].…”
