Quality of basic life support when using different commercially available public access defibrillators

Abstract: BackgroundBasic life support (BLS) guidelines focus on chest compressions with a minimal no-flow fraction (NFF), early defibrillation, and a short perishock pause. By using an automated external defibrillator (AED) lay persons are guided through the process of attaching electrodes and initiating defibrillation. It is unclear, however, to what extent the voice instructions given by the AED might influence the quality of initial resuscitation.MethodsUsing a patient simulator, 8 different commercially available A… Show more

“…SAED rhythm analysis can delay the time to first compression by between 5 and 50 seconds, depending on the device manufacturer. 19,34 Similarly, interruptions in CPR during manual rhythm analysis could also be influenced by the competency, training, and protocols of EMS personnel. 13,35 EMS systems that allow paramedics to perform CPR during defibrillator charging may also help to reduce the frequency of preshock CPR interruptions.…”

“…Using the AED can be a challenge for a deaf person, as many AEDs provide only voice prompts [16]. On the other hand, the untrained deaf rescuers are capable of using AED appropriately with visual prompts after basic training [6].…”
