Quality of experience and quality of service‐aware handover for video transmission in heterogeneous networks

Abstract: Heterogeneous networks offer a wide range of multimedia services, such as entertainment, advertising, and video conferences. In this multimedia scenario, users can access video content via heterogeneous wireless networks, such as LTE macro and small cells. Users also expect to receive real-time videos with Quality of Experience (QoE) support, which is a challenging task due to the great diversity of radio base stations in such heterogeneous environments. In this article, we introduce a Quality of Service (QoS-… Show more

“…Handover decisions should be made carefully in these HetNets environments to guarantee that video applications meet their criteria for low packet loss and delay, as well as QoE support [166]. For example, a user traveling in a vehicle may pass through multiple geographical areas in a short period of time, necessitating repeated handovers in order to retain connectivity with the video service provider [167].…”

“…In their paper, Medeiros et al [6] propose a QoS/QoE and Radio-aware SER handover management strategy for heterogeneous networks in order to facilitate video dissemination with QoS/QoE. The SER algorithm employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to change the priority of each criterion in order to choose the best radio base station for the mobile node to connect to, allowing for quick video transmission decisions and a great user experience.…”

“…The HO process directly affects QoS/QoE metrics on mobile networks, a statement discussed and worked on in the [19] article. In this article, we present the SER (service, experience, and radio) algorithm, which is an algorithm that uses AHP to deliver video content about HetNets with QoS/QoE support.…”
