Quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis

Abstract: Our results have shown that both physical and mental health components of QoL were negatively affected by MS. The most important predictor of QoL was depression followed by disability and fatigue. To improve the QoL for MS patients, in addition to physical disability, the influences of depression and fatigue on QoL should be taken into consideration.

“…While studies have highlighted the importance of psycho-social issues in determining QOL in MS [13, 14], particularly depression and fatigue [15, 16], there has been little research on associations of lifestyle and socio-demographic factors with physical and mental QOL. Potentially determining these associations may allow clinicians to provide evidence-based advice to people with MS on the relative importance of modifiable lifestyle risk factors that should be prioritized for optimal QOL.…”

“…Subjects performed knee extension exercise on a weight stack machine (Nevada Pro-T, BH Fitness; Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain) twice per week for 12 wk, with at least 48 h of rest between sessions. The load (40%-70% of MVIC), number of sets (3)(4), and number of repetitions (4-10) were adapted across the training period ( Table 1). The percentage of load during the training period was calculated based on MVIC data obtained at baseline.…”

“…Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience a range of symptoms related to mobility restrictions in the lower limbs that often result in impaired mobility [1] and high numbers of falls [2], which may lead to a reduction in their physical activity [3] and a lowering of their quality of life [4]. These symptoms are related to neuromuscular disorders such as impaired muscle strength [5][6] and muscle weakness in the lower limbs [7].…”

“…The rapid anti-fatigue effects of ketamine and the consequential development of an effective long-term anti-fatigue treatment would greatly reduce or eliminate the daily physical and social interferences of fatigue at home and in the workplace, which are often reported by patients with cancer-related fatigue or with chronic fatigue syndrome (Bennet et al, 2007). On a broader scale, these fatigue interventions could address related economic issues, allowing individuals to return to work and maintain productivity, enhancing overall quality of life (Sabes-Figuera et al, 2010; Göksel Karatepe et al, 2011). …”
