Quantification of greenhouse gas emissions of a steel factory in Brazil

Abstract: This work aimed to identify and quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a Brazilian steel industry. It identifies and quantifies the emissions for a further study of an effective action plan by the organization. As a result, it was found that Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from the company) were the largest emissions from the industry, representing more than 89% of total emissions. “…Some authors (e.g. Gomes et al, 2023) have pointed out the difficulty of performing analyses of Scope 3 emissions given the absence or insufficiency of data in publicly available reports. It is difficult, therefore, to measure Scope 3 because focal firms are unable to control their suppliers' emissions for full disclosure (Dhanda et al, 2022).…”

“…It is clear that there are gaps to fill in relation to both the academic and managerial aspects of this topic, which is a fact that motivated this research. Gomes et al (2023) indicate that in both the management field and academia, the practices and discussion of decarbonization models that focus on the SC are still incipient. Das and Jharkharia (2018) point out that because of the demands of focal companies, suppliers are seeking to develop management systems to evolve their carbon footprint in order to remain sustainable in a competitive environment.…”
