Quantitative analysis of Pb in soil samples by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with a simplified standard addition method

Abstract: In this work, different soil samples were extracted from seven sites in the vicinity of the Northwest China Lead–Zinc Smelter. A simplified standard addition method with LIBS (SAM-LIBS) was proposed to carry out quantitative analysis of Pb in solid soil samples. The method proposed in this work can be used for rapid assessment of the contaminants in soils.

“…Therefore, the LIBS spectra of TCMM suffer from strong spectral interference, which leads to inaccurate quantitation of elements in the materials. Quantitative analysis methods are an important aspect of the development of LIBS 14 . In recent years, machine learning algorithms using artificial intelligence have been applied to LIBS data processing.…”

“…Such situations seem also similar in other fields of analytical chemistry from 1990s to nowadays; many papers related to SAM have appeared in environmental chemistry [57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64], food chemistry [65][66][67][68], clinical chemistry [69][70][71] and miscellaneous fields [72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81]. The validation approaches in non-forensic toxicology fields were also of various types like those of forensic toxicology as listed in Table 1.…”

“…Sun et al 171 illustrated the differences in the slope of calibration curves obtained for Ag in spiked CRMs and soil samples before using machine-learning algorithms based on BPNN to propose a soil-independent multivariate model with REP in the range 5–6%. Wu et al 172 developed a standard addition method for quantification of Pb in soils from the vicinity of a Pb/Zn smelter. Addition of uncontaminated soil taken from 3 m depth at each of the individual sampling locations facilitated production of a standard addition curve (perhaps more accurately a “matrix dilution” curve) for each sample analysed.…”
