Quantitative assessment for tooth crack of the sun gear in a planetary gearbox

Jian Wang,
Xianzeng Liu,
Jun Zhang

Abstract: The sun gear in a planetary gearbox is prone to generate tooth crack due to its much more severe load conditions than other gears. The cracked sun gear will evolve into distinct tooth breakage thus may deteriorate the operation status and even causes catastrophic loss of the whole transmission system. To avoid tooth crack induced malfunction of the planetary gearbox, the tooth crack of sun gear should be accurately identified during the early stage. Therefore, a novelty quantitative assessment methodology for … Show more

“…As a key component of power transmission in industrial equipment, planetary gearboxes are widely employed in heavy industrial fields, including port cranes, heavy trucks, ships, and wind power generation, owing to their excellent structural design and strong load-bearing performance [1][2][3][4]. Long-term service under extreme operating conditions such as large loads and low rotational speeds, critical components such as gears and bearings in planetary gearboxes are prone to fatigue failures, such as tooth spalling, root cracks, bearing cracks, etc [5][6][7]. Meanwhile, as the planetary gearbox is a complex system, its key components interact with each other during operation, resulting in the significant challenge of simultaneous failures in multiple key components.…”

“…Luo et al [33] conducted the experimental analysis of fault vibration features evolution in a gear transmission with progressive localized gear tooth spalling. Wang et al [34] proposed a mathematical model for sun gear crack propagation based on vibration acceleration signals to quantitatively assess tooth crack damage. Liu [35] proposed a vibration signal model to simulate the vibration signals of the planetary gearbox.…”
