Quantitative Assessment of Myofibroblast in Severe Dysplasia, Microinvasion and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An Immunohistochemical Study

Abstract: Myofibroblast are essential for the integrity of human body by virtue of its role in wound healing and pathological organ remodeling. Myofibroblast is a universal cellular component in mammalian lesions, but not a typical component of normal untraumatized tissues. Therefore its presence in abundance in case of cancer is a matter of concern. Tumor microenvironment plays a pivotal role in tumor progression. These so called cancer associated fibroblast or myofibroblast are the major components and occur in stroma… Show more

“…Chaudhary et al 30 , Kapse et al 31 and Chauhan et al 32 investigated the role of CAFs in the progression of premalignant lesions in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and determined that an increased distribution of CAFs correlated with the progression of potentially malignant lesions of the oral mucosa to an invasive phenotype ie. in oral squamous cell carcinoma, concluding that they can be used as stromal markers for malignant lesions of the oral mucosa.…”

“…These results were in agreement with those of Kellerman et al .,[ 9 ] Seifi et al .,[ 10 ] and Kapse et al . [ 11 ] who have reported the presence of αSMA in 60%, 67%, and 70% of the tumors, respectively.…”

“…In the present study, αSMA stained slides of oral epithelial dysplasia ( n = 20) were evaluated for frequency of MFs expression and were positive in 5 (25%) of cases of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED). These results were in agreement with those of Seifi et al .,[ 10 ] Chaudhary et al .,[ 13 ] and Kapse et al .,[ 11 ] whereas de-Assis et al .,[ 14 ] Etemad-Moghadam et al .,[ 3 ] and Vered et al . [ 12 ] have reported a complete absence of MFs.…”

“…Fibroblasts/CAFs are prominent cell types in the tumor microenvironment and hence could interfere in the immunosurveillance mechanisms in cancer involving a cross-talk with primary immune cells [84][85][86][87]. While these α-smooth muscle actin positive (α-SMA) (myo)fibroblasts are virtually absent in the normal oral mucosa [88,89], it has been reported that myofibroblasts significantly increase in number while progressing to OPMD and to OSCC [88][89][90][91][92][93]. Other authors could not find evidence of myofibroblasts in normal mucosa or in patients with oral leukoplakia or dysplasia but only in OSCC [94][95][96].…”
