RESUMO Objetivo : Avaliar, por meio da eletromiografia de superfície (EMGs), a atividade dos músculos risório e zigomático, durante a produção do sorriso voluntário, comparando os dados em dois grupos de indivíduos com tempos diferentes de início da paralisia facial periférica (PFP). Métodos : 140 adultos distribuídos em três grupos: G1 (35 indivíduos com início da PFP entre 0 e 3 meses); G2 (35 indivíduos com início da PFP entre 3 e 6 meses); GC (70 controles saudáveis). Todos os participantes foram submetidos à avaliação que consistiu na aplicação de uma escala clínica para avaliação da mímica facial e na realização da EMGs em região de músculos risório e zigomático. Resultados: Os resultados indicaram que os grupos com paralisia facial, independentemente do tempo de início da doença, se diferenciaram significativamente do grupo de indivíduos saudáveis quanto à atividade muscular captada durante o repouso e no sorriso voluntário para ambas as regiões musculares testadas. Os grupos com paralisia facial não se diferenciaram significativamente quando considerada a ativação muscular para nenhuma das avaliações realizadas. O grupo com maior tempo de paralisia facial apresentou ativação muscular mais assimétrica durante o sorriso voluntário quando comparado aos demais grupos. A assimetria muscular foi mais evidente considerando o funcionamento do músculo risório. Conclusão: Os resultados da EMGs não evidenciaram diferenças entre os grupos de acordo com o tempo de início da doença.

Facial nerve palsy (FP) is the most common cranial nerve lesion, leading to partial or complete immobility of the affected half of face. If food residues on tooth surfaces cannot be removed by natural self-cleaning mechanisms that this is likely to lead to an increase dental plaque formation and the risk of dental, periodontal and general diseases. It was the aim of this study to assess oral health, oral hygiene with the influence of handedness and oral health related quality of life in patients with chronic peripheral FP. This study included 86 people. Patients with FP (n = 43) in an FP-group (FPG) were matched with 43 participants without ever diagnosed FP in a control group (CG). Oral health and oral hygiene were assessed in a clinical examination performed in hospital. Decayed-missing-filled-teeth-index, periodontal-screening-index, approximal plaque index and sulcus bleeding index were used to evaluate dental caries and periodontal health status. Oral health-related quality of life data (OHQoL) was collected with the Oral health impact profile (Germany-14) by interview. Oral health parameters in the FPG were significantly worse than in the CG. The median revealed 14.3% more proximal plaque (p = 0.014), 20.8% more sulcus bleeding (p = 0.002) and more than twice as much caries (p = 0.024). The paretic side compared to the non-paretic side of patients was significantly more affected by inflammatory periodontal diseases (p = 0.032) and had a higher prevalence of caries (p = 0.163). Right-handed patients with right-sided FP performed worse than right-handed patients with left-sided FP (p = 0.004). Patients with FP described a greater limitation of OHQoL than patients without this disease (p < 0.001). In conclusion, facial nerve palsy affects oral health, oral hygiene and OHQoL of patients while handedness influences oral hygiene and oral health.

Objetivo: Analisar o potencial terapêutico da aplicação de toxina botulínica para o tratamento de paralisias faciais e bruxismo. Métodos: Seguindo os critérios da Declaração PRISMA, foi realizado uma revisão integrativa de literatura em pares, adotando uma abordagem reflexiva do assunto. Para a busca dos artigos foi utilizado a base de dados da Pubmed MEDLINE e Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde BVS, utilizando os descritores “toxina botulínica” combinado aos descritores “bruxismo” e “paralisia facial”. Resultados: Foram utilizados 20 artigos sendo agrupados em três temáticas: “eficiência da toxina botulínica no tratamento de paralisias faciais”, “inovação no tratamento de paralisia facial com toxina botulínica” e “eficiência da toxina botulínica no tratamento de bruxismo”. Contabilizando 2143 pacientes, onde evidenciou-se que a terapêutica pode ser indicada no tratamento de bruxismo e paralisias faciais. Considerações Finais: A aplicação da toxina botulínica se mostrou eficaz para os tratamentos das paralisias faciais e bruxismo, não sendo necessário a utilização de nenhuma terapêutica adjuvante em associação.
