Quantitative ionization chamber alignment to a water surface: Theory and simulation

Abstract: The depth-ionization gradient has a discontinuity and is maximized when the outer-radius of a submerged IC coincides with the water surface. This feature can be used to auto-align ICs to the water surface at the time of scanning and/or be applied retrospectively to scan data to quantify absolute IC depth. Utilization of the gCAP should yield accurate and reproducible depth calibration for clinical depth-ionization measurements between setups and between users.

“…This effect persists, although it is moderated, when the water surface tension is reduced. This finding confirms the recommendations of AAPM TG‐106 and others that PDD scans should be performed from depth in water toward the water surface. The reduction in water surface tension via the addition of dishwashing detergent or other chemical to the water is not recommended for standard clinical water tank usage.…”

“…Noise can be further reduced by acquiring data at slower speeds for a continuously moving IC or sampling for longer times at each individual depth (recommended). Fitting of these measurements analogous to the work done in the companion paper confirms the gCAP locations, as shown in Data .…”
