Quasi-one-dimensional photonic crystal as a compact building-block for refractometric optical sensors

Abstract: We report the fabrication and the characterization of the refractometric and thermo-optical properties of a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide photonic crystal-a strong, 76-m-long Bragg grating. The transmission spectra (around 660 nm) of the structure have been measured as a function of both the cladding refractive index and the temperature. The transmission stopband was found to shift by 0.8-nm wavelength for either a cladding refractive index change of 0.05 or a temperature change of 120 K. The steep stopband … Show more

“…The PhC is a one-, two-, or three-dimensional structure with a periodically modulated dielectric function and whose period of modulation is on the order of the optical wavelength. The optical characteristics of PhCs have profound implications for light localization [7], quantum state generation [8], high efficiency microlasers [9], optical sensors [10,11], and a wide range of photonic devices [12].…”

“…In past years, 1D-PBG structures attracted lot of attention of scientist and researchers, due to their enormous advantages and applications in optoelectronic devices, instrumentation and sensors [5][6][7][8]. PS is a two phase composite structure, being a mixture of air and the silicon solid phase containing the silicon network with silicon walls and pores [9].…”

“…These oscillations are due to Fabry-Perot resonances of Bloch modes propagating in the cavity defined by the grated section [59,60]. Any small structural perturbation in the environment of the GWG, which disturbs the evanescent field of the GWG resonant modes, will lead to a shift of its transmission spectrum.…”

“…Such an effect can be exploited for sensing applications. In 2005, our IOMS group fabricated and demonstrated an optical GWGC as a readout for bulk-index evanescent field sensing with a resolution for index changes of in the visible wavelength range [59]. As a follow-up, one aim of this PhD project is to fabricate and demonstrate the low loss GWGCs for bulk index concentration sensing (homogeneous sensing) with improved sensitivity.…”
