Queens for a Day:Queer Eye for the Straight Guyand the Neoliberal Project

Abstract: This paper moves beyond a conventional critique of Bravo's popular makeover show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy that focuses on gay stereotyping to consider how the show puts gay cultural expertise to work to reform a heterosexual masculinity that is compatible with the neoliberal moment. “…Nevertheless, paying more careful attention to men and masculinity may deepen understanding of how gender and sexuality are re-articulated in a postfeminist (media) culture. Certainly, some relevant beginnings have already been made, for example, the link between male subjectivities and neoliberalism has been recognized in previous studies (Sender, 2006) as well as the shift towards the disciplining and policing of male embodiment (Gill et al, 2008). These tendencies can be found, for example, in the reality television series The Biggest Loser in which the discourses of bodily management, responsibility and individuality concern male competitors as much as they concern women.…”

“…In passing these tests, the man achieves a level of bodily management that, the programme suggests, leads the participant to a better and more powerful social position: the man becomes admired and respected by his peers as well as by his partner. Sometimes the possibility for career advancement is also mentioned (see also Sender, 2006;Di Mattia, 2007, p. 142). In these two series the opportunities that postfeminism is said to offer to women (McRobbie, 2009) seem to be available for men, the so-called free choices that men make materialize as career options and general life management skills.…”

“…Additionally, Sender (2006) makes a similar claim about the Bravo cable network's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which has been likened to a form of gay minstrelsy in a format laden with consumerism, product placement, and corporate sponsorship. We are particularly troubled by the conflation of consumerism and citizenship in neoliberalism, which may lead society at large to celebrate consumer inclusion as a civil/human rights victory.…”
