Quench Simulation of REBCO Cable-in-Conduit Conductor With Twisted Stacked-Tape Cable

Abstract: Quench protection is a critical issue for magnet using high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials like REBCO. For cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) with twisted REBCO tapes, the angular dependent critical current density (Jc) of tape will further complicates the quench behavior. The CryoSoft code THEA is used to simulate the quench behavior of various sub-scale CICC in view of a quench experiment in SULTAN facility. The CICC are composed of the twisted tape stack assembled into copper shell (strand). It … Show more

“…In order to maintain current flow during quench, the SULTAN superconducting transformer will be replaced by a DC power supply providing 15 kA current. The first theoretical studies were done in order to understand how to exploit this unique experimental opportunity [43], [44].…”

“…One question is how the heating and temperature develop in a multi-tape REBCO conductor [147][148][149]. Would the current sharing between tapes in a multi-tape architecture reduce the peak temperature compared to a single tape [150,151]? The answer through both experimental and computational studies will be important to understand the quench behavior of conductors with different margins due to local defects (Section 3.3) and/or different magnetic fields, temperatures and strain states in a coil.…”

“…The key parameters here are the electrical and thermal contact resistances between tapes that can affect the current sharing and quench dynamics [149,151]. With a contact resistivity ranging from 20 to 100 µΩ cm 2 [152], the non-insulation REBCO solenoid magnet technology demonstrates the self-protection capability thanks to the current sharing between the tapes [153].…”
