To boost energy saving for the general delay-tolerant IoT networks, a two-stage and single-relay queueing communication scheme is investigated. Concretely, a traffic-aware Nthreshold and gated-service policy are applied at the relay. As two fundamental and significant performance metrics, the mean waiting time and long-term expected power consumption are explicitly derived and related with the queueing and service parameters, such as packet arrival rate, service threshold and channel statistics. Besides, we take into account the electrical circuit energy consumptions when the relay server and access point (AP) are in different modes and energy costs for mode transitions, whereby the power consumption model is more practical. The expected power minimization problem under the mean waiting time constraint is formulated. Tight closed-form bounds are adopted to obtain tractable analytical formulae with less computational complexity. The optimal energy-saving service threshold that can flexibly adjust to packet arrival rate is determined. In addition, numerical results reveal that: 1) sacrificing the mean waiting time not necessarily facilitates power savings; 2) a higher arrival rate leads to a greater optimal service threshold; and 3) our policy performs better than the current state-of-the-art.Index Terms-Delay tolerant IoT relaying networks, mean waiting time, N -threshold and gated policy, two-hop queueing, and traffic-aware power saving.

The ever-growing Internet of Things (IoT) data traffic is one of the primary research focuses of future mobile networks. 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards like Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) have been designed for broadband services. However, IoT devices are mainly based on narrowband applications. Standards like LTE-A might not provide efficient spectrum utilization when serving IoT applications. The aggregation of IoT data at an intermediate node before transmission can answer the issues of spectral efficiency. The objective of this work is to utilize the low cost 3GPP fixed, inband, layer-3 Relay Node (RN) for integrating IoT traffic into 5G network by multiplexing data packets at the RN before transmission to the Base Station (BS) in the form of large multiplexed packets. Frequency resource blocks can be shared among several devices with this method. An analytical model for this scheme, developed as an r-stage Coxian process, determines the radio resource utilization and system gain achieved. The model is validated by comparing the obtained results with simulation results.

Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access Network (EUTRAN) deals with high uplink and downlink throughput. The Proportional Fair (PF) Medium Access Control (MAC) scheduler offered a good balance between allocated resources and fairness among the User Equipment (UE) in comparison with other schedulers. In the PF scheduler, at each cycle of resource allocation, a feedback mechanism ensures that operational resource requirements are met while maintaining a degree of fairness among the UE. We analyze the effect of feedback Transmission Time Interval (TTI) delay on two typical EUTRAN networks, in terms of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One network is referred to as EUTRAN LTE and the other as EUTRAN LTE-A, which fulfils high throughput requirement. We evaluate the performance of the PF MAC scheduler for both networks under varying feedback delay in TTI. Simulated results show that the delay in TTI affects the performance of resource allocation in terms of throughput, fairness, and spectral efficiency. Feedback delay improves network performance by compensating effect of imperfect channel condition.
