Quisquis: A New Design for Anonymous Cryptocurrencies

Abstract: Despite their usage of pseudonyms rather than persistent identifiers, most existing cryptocurrencies do not provide users with any meaningful levels of privacy. This has prompted the creation of privacyenhanced cryptocurrencies such as Monero and Zcash, which are specifically designed to counteract the tracking analysis possible in currencies like Bitcoin. These cryptocurrencies, however, also suffer from some drawbacks: in both Monero and Zcash, the set of potential unspent coins is always growing, which mean… Show more

“…QuisQuis [22] and Zether [5] propose solutions that provide partial anonymity. On a high level, instead of sending a transaction that refers only to the accounts of the sender and the recipients of a payment, the sender adds accounts of other users, who act as an anonymity set (similar to CryptoNote [44]).…”

Examples of decentralized and privacy-preserving token systems are Confidential Assets [40], Zether [5], QuisQuis [22] and Zerocash [4], with the latter offering the highest level of privacy protection. Zerocash.…”

“…By using ZK-SNArKs, Zerocash can prove that the sources of a new transaction are within the set of existing coins but have not been spent before, without disclosing the sources themselves. This means that Zerocash, similar to Monero, keeps an ever-expanding set of ''coins'' and ''spent coins'' [11]. In practice, the Zerocash implementation Zcash, uses multiple sets of coins, a transparent set as in the Bitcoin system, and a shielded-pool where transactions employ ZK-SNArKs to prove validity while hiding the specifics.…”
