“…The efficacy of PPIs in the management of nighttime heartburn has been documented in placebo-controlled studies [20, 21]. In the US Gallup survey, satisfaction with prescription medication was markedly higher than with over-the-counter medication or with lifestyle changes such as avoiding meals before going to bed or elevating the head of the bed [7].…”

“…Further definitions of symptom relief used in other clinical trials are [12,13,14]: (1) median time to achieve the first 24-hour interval without heartburn; (2) satisfactory heartburn relief: no ore than one episode of moderate severity during a preceding interval of seven days; (3) time to first and sustained resolution of heartburn; (4) total relief of symptoms on the fourth day of treatment defined as no or only mild heartburn, and (5) no more than one episode of moderate heartburn during 7 days.…”

“…The efficacy of PPI therapy in the treatment of nighttime GERD symptoms has been well documented [27,28,29,30,31,32]. It should be noted that direct comparisons from study to study with regard to the comparative efficacy of PPI drugs in specifically treating nighttime reflux may be difficult due to major differences in how nighttime reflux is defined and how the data are presented.…”

“…Several placebo-controlled or open-label studies of rabeprazole have also confirmed its efficacy in the treatment of nighttime GERD symptoms [30,31,32]. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of patients with endoscopically-negative GERD demonstrated that the time to the first nighttime heartburn-free interval was 1.5 days with rabeprazole 10 mg and 2.5 days with rabeprazole 20 mg, vs. 15.0 days for placebo [30].…”
