“…Kenya), where it infrequently occurs in the subalpine and alpine belts from 2150 to 4800 m. Outside Africa R. lamprocarpum is widespread in southern South America ranging along the western fringes of the continent from the Juan Fernandez Islands to Tierra del Fuego, on the Falkland Islands and on Gough Island in the Tristan da Cunha group on the South Atlantic. Some disjunt and highly isolated stations of the species are known from Portugal and Spain on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe (Ochyra et al 1988). Ka: 161, Frahm 8095; 163, Frahm 8202.…”

“…For a survey of African species see De Sloover (1977); in addition, for some African taxa the taxonomic treatments of Frisvoll (1988) and Ochyra et al (1988) should be consulted.…”

“…& Wilson, following the poor taxonomic concept of this species suggested by Clifford (1955) who merged with it the majority of austral species of the traditionally understood genus Racomitrium. The present discovery represents a major range extension of B. lamprocarpa which is an Afro-American south-temperate species extending to the Iberian Peninsula (Ochyra, Sérgio & Schumacker, 1988) and discovered once on Îles Kerguelen in the Subantarctic (Bednarek- Ochyra & Ochyra, 1998). The species is absent from the latest moss flora of Macquarie Island (Seppelt, 2004) but it is likely that a careful assessment of all available collections of austral Racomitrium crispulum will reveal this species in other regions.…”

“…It is a distinct, though variable, species, that is most likely to be confused with B. lamprocarpa (Mü ll.Hal.) Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, which is a pan-holantarctic species, distributed on some subantarctic islands, including Îles Kerguelen (Bednarek- Ochyra & Ochyra, 1998), Heard Island (Ellis et al, 2010), Marion Island (Ellis et al, 2011), and Macquarie Island (Blockeel et al, 2007), extending to South America (Bednarek- Ochyra et al, 1996;Blockeel et al, 2002Blockeel et al, , 2009) and Africa (Ochyra et al, 1988;Bednarek-Ochyra & Ochyra, 2012b;Ochyra & van Rooy, 2013). These species share a similar overall appearance and have similar ecological preferences, but B. lamprocarpa differs from B. orthotrichacea in its entirely smooth laminal cells and lack of a basal marginal border.…”
