Automatic vehicle license plate recognition is an essential part of intelligent vehicle access control and monitoring systems. With the increasing number of vehicles, it is important that an effective real-time system for automated license plate recognition is developed. Computer vision techniques are typically used for this task. However, it remains a challenging problem, as both high accuracy and low processing time are required in such a system. Here, we propose a method for license plate recognition that seeks to find a balance between these two requirements. The proposed method consists of two stages: detection and recognition. In the detection stage, the image is processed so that a region of interest is identified. In the recognition stage, features are extracted from the region of interest using the histogram of oriented gradients method. These features are then used to train an artificial neural network to identify characters in the license plate. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a high level of accuracy as well as low processing time when compared to existing methods, indicating that it is suitable for real-time applications.

Evolving multi-dimensional wavelet neural networks for classification using Cartesian Genetic Programming

Wavelet Neural Networks (WNNs) are complex artificial neural systems and their training can be a challenge. In the past, most common training schemes for WNNs, such as gradient descent, have been restricted to training only a subset of differentiable parameters. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary method to train both differentiable and non-differentiable parameters using the concept of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP). The approach was evaluated on the two-spiral task and on real-world datasets for the detection of breast cancer and Parkinson's disease. In our experiments, the performance of the proposed method was comparable to several standard methods of classification. On the breast cancer dataset, the performance was better than other non-ensemble and multistep processing methods. The experimental results show how the performance of WNNs depends on the number of wavelons used. The presented case studies demonstrate that the proposed WNNs perform competitively in comparison to several other methods and results reported in literature.

Segmentation of Microscopic Images of Sputum Stained by Ziehl-Nielsen Using Wavelet Transform Mexican Hat

Обоснование. Микроскопические исследования применяются в диагностике большого числа заболеваний, в том числе туберкулёза лёгких. Бактериоскопическое исследование является практически единственным доступным для общей лечебной сети методом выявления больных туберкулёзом бактериовыделителей. При этом качество бактериоскопической диагностики туберкулёза в клинико-диагностических лабораториях общей лечебной сети остаётся не на должном уровне, что может быть исправлено применением автоматизированного анализа цифровых микроскопических изображений препаратов мокроты, окрашенной по методу Циля-Нильсена. Одним из первых этапов автоматизированного анализа изображений является их сегментация. Целью исследования является изучение возможности сегментации цифрового изображения микроскопического препарата мокроты, окрашенной по методу Циля-Нильсена, с использованием вейвлет-преобразования Mexican Hat. Материалы и методы. В качестве материала исследования использовались 830 цифровых изображений, полученных при микроскопии 10 мазков мокроты, окрашенной по методу Циля-Нильсена. Мазки изготавливались из мокроты пациентов, больных туберкулёзом лёгких. Каждое изображение имело разрешение 572 × 422 пикселей. Для автоматизированной сегментации изображений использовалось двумерное вейвлет-преобразование Mexican Hat Wavelet. Результаты. По результатам исследования установлено оптимальное значение стандартного отклонения, которое является единственным варьирующимся параметром вейвлета Mexican Hat, а также произведена оценка времени выполнения вейвлет-преобразования цифровых микроскопических изображений мокроты, окрашенной по методу Циля-Нильесна. Заключение. По результатам исследования сделано заключение о том, что использование двумерного вейвлет-преобразования Mexican Hat цифровых микроскопических изображений мокроты, окрашенной по методу Циля-Нильсена, позволяет сегментировать данные изображения, что может быть использовано для последующей разработки систем автоматизированной бактериоскопической диагностики туберкулёза.
