Radiation epidemiology and recent paediatric computed tomography studies

Abstract: Abstract-Recent record-linkage studies of cancer risk following computed tomography (CT)procedures among children and adolescents under 21 years of age must be interpreted with caution. The reasons why the examinations were performed were not known, and the dosimetric approaches did not include individual dose reconstructions or account for the possibility for missed examinations. The recent report (2013) on children by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation concluded that t… Show more

Thus, confounding by indication (reverse causation) must be ruled out completely, or observed excess cancer risk may be falsely, and facilely, attributed to CT exposure.…”

“…29 Based on these findings, one aspect to consider is the worldwide increase in medical radiation exposure 30 and the influence of these low-doses in radiosensitive organs as thyroid. Several studies successfully correlated number and radiation dose of CT Scans for infants and adolescents to a greater thyroid cancer risk, 29,31,32 especially in females. Another relevant question is whether genetic alterations could predispose to radiation carcinogenic actions.…”
