“…Coleman et al (1994) reported that all five patients with positive nodes died of cancer, whereas 14 of 34 patients (41.2%) with negative nodes died of cancer (P ¼ 0.02). Maneo et al, (1999) identified six node-positive patients in their series, and five experienced recurrence, whereas half of 28 nodenegative patients experienced recurrence.…”

“…The utility of radical hysterectomy, a more conservative procedure, has been reported, but it also has a high rate of complications. Coleman et al (1994) evaluated the utility of radical hysterectomy (chiefly type III hysterectomy) including pelvic lymphadenectomy in 50 patients with persistent or recurrent cervical cancer after primary radiation therapy. The 5-and 10-year survival rates for all cases was 72 and 60%, but severe postoperative complications (grade III or higher) occurred in 42% of the patients, along with one postoperative death because of sepsis.…”

“…In five studies, 100,101,[103][104][105] radical hysterectomy was conducted as salvage surgery with curative intent. Tupper 106 described Wertheim's operation, and in Ibsen et al 102 both Wertheim's operation and pelvic exenteration (which could be total, anterior or posterior) were combined with pelvic lymph node dissection.…”
