Radical Scavenging Activity of Ethanol Extracts and Solvent Partitioned Fractions from Various Red Seaweeds

Abstract: : The EtOH extracts of red seaweeds (Symphyocladia latiuscula, Chondrus ocellatus and Carpopeltis affinis) and solvent partitioned fractions were investigated for their 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effects and the total phenolic contents were correlated with ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities. The EtOH extracts and their solvent partitioned fractions exhibited strong ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activitie… Show more

“…Therefore, in this study we investigated the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activity of a 70% EtOH extract of S. linearis. S. linearis extract exhibited weaker antioxidant activity (considering both DPPH and ABTS) than that previously reported the IC 50 value for DPPH of S. latiuscula MeOH extract was 9.03 μg/mL and the ABTS radical scavenging effect of S. latiuscula EtOH extract was 3.8% at 60 μg/mL (Cho et al, 2012;Park et al, 1998). Additionally, inhibition of ROS production by the S. linearis extract (even when assayed at a high concentration of 100 μg/mL) was ≤ 50% (Fig.…”

“…Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anions, which are overexpressed by oxidative stress in the human body damage DNA, cell membranes, and proteins and enzymes within cells, in addition to inducing other harms, such as cell aging, an increase in cancer cells, and brain damage [ 30 , 31 ]. Thus, the analysis methods of ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities are typically utilized to determine how well a food ingredient with high antioxidant activity removes ROS [ 30 , 31 ]. The activity is measured by utilizing the principle in which a radical is reduced due to an antioxidant, resulting in decolorization from its intrinsic color [ 30 , 31 ].…”
