Abstract:Mars Observer radio science investigations focus on two major areas of study: the gravity field and the atmosphere of Mars. Measurement accuracies expressed as an equivalent spacecraft velocity are expected to be of the order of 100 μm/s (for both types of investigations) from use of an improved radio transponder for two‐way spacecraft tracking and a highly stable on‐board oscillator for atmospheric occultation measurements. Abstract. The significant power in the Martian gravitational field due to the Tharsis rise may mask or modify gravitational signatures that contain important information on Martian geophysical processes. In order to isolate gravity signals in regions where the field is significantly affected by Tharsis as well to investigate characteristics of the global field, we present a numerical technique to "remove" Tharsis from the Martian gravitational field. Our analysis will show that to first order Tharsis can be represented as a sixth-degree spherical harmonic zonal gravitational feature in a reference frame in which the axis of symmetry runs through the center of the province. Using data from a radio occultation experiment onboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, altitude variations of the scale height of the neutral atmosphere in the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars are analyzed. The averaged altitude gradient of temperature for neutrals in the thermosphere is estimated. The revealed variations of the scale height of the neutral atmosphere at zenith angles of less than 82 ° indicate that the near polar atmosphere is not isothermal at altitudes of 125-145 km, which experimentally confirms predictions of models of the Martian atmosphere. It is shown that when one approaches the terminator the near polar atmosphere is cooled and the effects of variation of the solar zenith angle modulate the local time effects in both hemispheres.
