Radiofrequency treatment has a beneficial role in reducing low back pain due to facet syndrome in octogenarians or older

Abstract: IntroductionChronic low back pain is a disabling phenomenon that can cause a severe reduction in quality of life, especially in elderly patients. Surgical treatment is sometimes a big challenge for these elderly patients. Radiofrequency (RF) ablation is an increasingly popular method for treating low back pain caused by facet syndrome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether RF neurotomy is effective in terms of pain reduction and functional outcome in elderly patients.Patients and methodsFifty-eight… Show more

“…Assessment of function in studies of chronic low back pain is vital given that this condition is the leading causes of disability and work absenteeism in the U. S. [ 1 , 2 ]. The finding of functional improvement in a large proportion of this cohort (58%) is particularly notable given the mixed results and shorter duration of follow-up of functional outcome measurement in prior studies [ 9 11 , 14 , 16 18 ].…”

“…Lumbar radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a commonly used minimally invasive intervention that selectively creates thermal lesions to the nerves supplying painful joints identified by MBBs. [14][15][16][17][18][19] In some studies, particularly those that use stringent patient selection and RFA procedure techniques consistent with clinical practice guidelines, RFA results in largemagnitude, durable improvements in pain and functional limitations. [20][21][22][23][24][25][26] However, other studies, some of which use alternative protocols for patient selection and RFA technique, demonstrate limited benefit of RFA.…”

“…The research which was carried out in Clinic of Curing Pain at the Clinics of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care in Warsaw in the period 2009-2011 in the study groups of patients proved that thermolesion treatment was an effective method of treating chronic pain. The positive effects of the treatment were observed in 18/20 (90%) patients from group I, 18/19 (94.73%) of patients from group II and 31/33 (93.93%) of patients from group III [19][20][21][22].…”
