Radiographic characteristics of mesiodens in a non‐syndromic pediatric population in the Black Sea region

Abstract: Aim A mesiodens is the most frequent type of supernumerary tooth. They can be related to several complications, such as ectopic eruption and midline diastema. The aim of the present study was to assess the radiographic properties of mesiodens by analyzing the associated age, sex distribution, number of mesiodens per patient, shape, direction of eruption, and their association with complications. Methods The present study was performed using panoramic radiographs of 14 400 pediatric patients (4‐14 years old) wh… Show more

“…Mesiodens é o supranumerário mais comum e tem predileção com o gênero masculino, na faixa etária de 6-9 anos. Localizado na grande maioria dos casos na maxila, pode se apresentar de forma cônica e também de forma invertida, podendo causar retardos na erupção dentária, diastemas, apinhamentos, problemas estéticos e disfunções oclusais (SOARES et al, 2017;ALTAN;AKKOC;ALTAN, 2019;ROSA et al, 2019).…”

“…Where tuberculate shaped mesiodens is commonly seen is the permanent dentition, and the mesiodens disrupt eruption. [6,7] Root formation does not exist in conicalshaped teeth, while it also does not exist or is incomplete in tuberculate-shaped teeth. Supplemental mesiodens is most commonly seen in the primary dentition.…”

“…Several clinical complications might occur due to mesiodens such as involvement with the adjacent teeth eruption and location, mesiodens pulpitis, dentigerous cyst formation, delayed or non-eruption of maxillary incisors, axial rotation or inclination of erupted permanent teeth, intraoral infection, and midline diastema. [7][8][9][10] The most frequently covered complications in the literature and the most commonly reported complications are diastema, delayed eruption, rotation, root resorption, and dentigerous cyst formation. [7][8] We aimed to give information about the surgical intervention's application time and success and removable orthodontic apparatus in mesiodens treatment.…”
