Radiological demonstration of Meckel's diverticulum

Abstract: Three cases of Meckel's diverticulum are described. All were investigated by the conventional barium meal and follow-through examination. The methods of radiological investigation are considered and, contrary to the opinion of many authors, the value of the conventional barium examination is stressed.

“…15 Sometimes, mucosal irregularity may be seen due to ectopic gastric mucosa, 16 while filling defects can occur from blood clots in a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum. 17 Enteroclysis is more reliable than conventional barium studies in detecting the Meckel's diverticulum. In a large study consisting of 415 enteroclysis examinations, 11 out of the 13 histopathologically confirmed cases of Meckel's diverticulum were correctly identified on enteroclysis with only one falsepositive result.…”

“…Meckel described, early in the nineteenth century, the anatomy and the embryology of this "unusual" ileal diverticulum. Meckel's diverticulum is not unusual, with the prevalence in autopsy records about 2% [1][2][3].…”

“…Meckel's diverticulum is found in 1–3 per cent of autopsies 3 . Plonka 4 studied in detail the incidence of intussusception caused by invaginated Meckel's diverticulum and found it to be around 2 per cent of all cases of intussusception.…”

“…Meckel's diverticulum is rarely discovered on barium follow through examination and small bowel enema is advocated for detection of Meckel's diverticulum 5 , 6 . However, Craig and Murfitt 3 are of the opinion that if the radiologist has a high index of suspicion while performing the examination, standard barium follow through examination is a satisfactory method for screening Meckel's diverticulum.…”
